It is designed to provide services as well as in-depth information, primarily for an audience of brokers and agents who operate in or who have an interest in the specialist insurance market.

We made it easy to navigate and find the service or information users are looking for, whether they are a Lloyd's broker or a managing agent with specialist requirements, or a journalist or member of the public with a more general enquiry. We also created a customisable dashboard - My Lloyd's – to help regular visitors gain easy access to the information and services they use most often.

More specifically, the site provides:

Directories for Lloyd’s-registered brokers

Information for the investment community about Lloyd's financial performance, structure and important events

In-depth comment pieces and latest market news

An overview of Lloyd’s, its people, graduate careers and FAQs about working for Lloyd's

Lloyd's business timetable provides information on the regulatory and Corporation deadlines that apply to the Lloyd's market

Jo Scott, Digital Communications Manager, at Lloyd’s said: "Our research showed that users of the previous site found it a fragmented experience. We wanted to offer a one stop shop for all our on-line services, and to make lloyds.com easier to use. We are delighted with the site Aqueduct has put together. They have tackled an enormously complex project that features a huge amount of information, and made it easily navigable and simple to use for busy industry professionals."

We're in the MoneyWeek

Britain’s best selling financial magazine has just signed a two year deal with us to maintain and enhance their digital presence.

MoneyWeek have big plans for its flagship publication and website. Back in 1960, a child diagnosed with leukaemia was pretty much handed a death sentence, but today, thanks to the charity's research, 9 out of 10 kids survive the most common form of leukaemia.

There's still a long way to go in beating blood cancers, however, and our campaign will help to highlight the personal stories of those affected and their loved ones to a wider audience.

There are 110,000 people living with blood cancer in the UK, and 28,700 diagnosed every year. Only a small percentage of cases are children, contrary to common perception.

The campaign will use Facebook, Twitter, blogs, email and a special section on the charity's website. It is expected to go live in June 2010.

We're Webby Award nominees for Manchester City FC!

Aqueduct's role in building the new Manchester City FC website has won us a nomination for the Sports category of the internationally acclaimed Webby Awards. They come and they go, the décor changes, the food styles go through fusion and then separate out into rustic traditionalism. It’s like a great big game of okey-cokey, with everyone playing to the same rules, not wanting to break the circle and, at the end of the day, all about the metrics of menu and bums on seats. But, this is a restaurant. What about the experience?

With so many bars and restaurants copying one another on décor menu and logo design, why is that no one has realised that the one thing that can distinguish them is the way they behave. Brand behaviour, even in the twittering, social interactive world we now live in, has always been more important than what the brand’s logo looks like. I can’t remember what came first: Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Hamburger Union - they all have similar typefaces and neutral blonde wood interiors (bit like the burgers).

As with burgers, so with dim sum restaurants – out with the blonde wood and in with lots of glossy black décor and modernist fleuro typeface logos – different flavours, décor, but same blank behavioural landscape. Our work for Ping Pong sidestepped talking about the menu and sets up more of an expectation and promise of the lunch or dinner ahead. We featured the food in such a way that it ticks the quality/style boxes straight away. Once the food was sorted we were freed up to set up the brand behaviour – owning sociability and conversation, and creating a reason to come back to Ping Pong that’s as sticky as their traditional sticky rice parcels (No.37, in case you’re interested).

With a campaign like this you can both meet the metrics and put bums on seats, but start a buzz that will get people ping ponging till the cows come home…

Now where shall I go for a burger? GBK? BGK? We’re not expensive, we know this from our rates – compare us with other London agencies in Econsultancy’s latest rates survey – Aqueduct’s rates are on average 20% below other London agencies. Furthermore, we don’t charge for overheads. Many agencies add a percentage to their basic costs to cover for holidays, sickness, general disbursements, laziness and poor project management. We don’t. Despite these factors we sometimes find we lose out on price. Why is this?

There are a number of factors that go into putting together a price for a job. We believe that there are three types of agency when it comes to pricing:

“We’ll give you the best price” agencies – usually very small outfits, can afford to do a job for lower than average rates, attractive in price but often poor quality solution – takes longer, cuts corners, fails on business objectives, or ends up costing more to get what you want

“We’ll do what we have to to win this job” agencies – will offer a low price for initial piece of work, or sell in a low price at the start then rack up additional charges whenever the opportunity arises

“We will give you an honest price for quality work” agencies – like Aqueduct. You may not be presented with the cheapest price, but it’s an honest estimate based directly on scope and quality delivery

Prices often go up. We hear it from client side time and time again. Why? If you’re with agency type 1 or 2, then you can see why. If you’re with agency type 3, it’s most likely down to scope under estimating. Unstated, unrealised or (worse but most common) overlooked assumptions all contribute to rising prices.

What’s our recommendation to clients? Work with an agency or agencies to refine the scope of a job as much as possible. Take their advice on strategy and be honest about budgets and resources available. Invest in getting to accurate scope before committing to the full job with any agency. Accurate, clearly bounded scope results in an accurate, clearly bounded price. Otherwise it’s an “estimate” that may be closer to what you would like than what it will be. Trust honesty and quality, not just the price.

Predictions for 2010

We're looking forward to another year of fantastic achievements in 2010. The first phases of the new site are due to launch in 2010.

Peter Hambling, Head, Lloyd’s Information Technology Group , said: “Digital is becoming, in the financial world as everywhere else, an increasingly important channel. As the internet makes the world smaller, we are competing more than ever before on an international stage and Aqueduct through a tender process demonstrated they had the optimal capabilities to implement Lloyd’s creative designs on our chosen platforms.”

Rob Oubridge, our managing director, added: “Lloyd’s is making a great push in the digital space and is ideally placed to be a global information hub for the sector. Just goes to show that things ‘go viral’ because they stimulate people to talk about them, rather than because they’re frivolous and on the interweb. Aqueduct’s “Trespass” campaign for Network Rail has been all over the telly this week because it’s arresting and a little controversial, creatively. We’ll be consulting the bible of advertising agency twaddle to see if we can work out some grand statistics and a convoluted diagram to explain how this has amplified an important public service campaign, and how many lives that might save. We’ll keep you posted.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Video courtesy of ITV Central.

Andy Mac... new head chef in the creative kitchen

Aqueduct has a new creative director: Andy McLane has joined the agency today from VCCP. Over the years Andy has worked at some of the leading agencies in town (BBH, Claydon Heeley, Tequila TBWA, Miles Calcraft DDB and a few more besides). He’s produced award winning and effective work in campaigns that were executed in digital and traditional media above, below and through the line for clients such as O2, Skoda, Persil, The Army, Compaq and Theakston, to name but a few.

Andy is heading all creative functions at Aqueduct and will be immediately working with the core creative team of Clive Russell, Nicole Shelley, Leigh Maclellan and Sam Willard to support them in current projects and imminent pitches.

“This is a very important appointment for us – creativity is a fundamental in how well our work affects our clients’ worlds and as a ‘reasoning first’ agency, the lead creative role is absolutely pivotal” said Rob Oubridge, MD. “Crucially, Andy brings deep experience and a principled approach across the digital and non-digital media, which nearly all our work now encompasses”.

“I chose to join Aqueduct because I became quickly convinced that the agency represented the next generation of agile, energetic and entrepreneurial agencies, gifted with the nous to know how to answer the brief without being tied to proprietary thinking.“ said Andy.

Aqueduct’s core creative team, led by Clive Russell and Nicole Shelley, will continue to push development on long-running and established campaigns such as Safety 365 at Network Rail, while Andy learns the ropes and works with the teams on the next evolutions to those campaigns.

With some major and exciting projects about to start, with both existing and new clients, there is plenty for Andy to get his teeth into, and in due course he will no doubt be breaking a few eggs to make omelettes. The site, built on Sitecore CMS, coincided with the pre-order launch of Man City's new kit. It painlessly handled over 1,000 orders in the first 24 hours, taking in excess of £50,000.

Together with creative agency Poke, Aqueduct provided the CMS integration and technical development that will unify the three previously separate platforms of retail, ticketing and information. We're building ticketing now, to be launched 1st August.

The site sets itself apart from rival clubs with a simple bold design and no display advertising whatsoever.

We're proud to support Man City this year. Or were they caught out by long production and distribution time lines?

Probably, they've only really been pariahs for a matter of weeks (although you might have thought someone pre-press would have winced slightly on a read through).

One thing that could have helped would be to find a 'voice' for the magazine that isn't so direct-from-brand, the 'voice' being a place from which this advice could come that would not be so patronising and therefore galling in this instance.

Public service advertising has cracked this in the last few years - the 'voice' that speaks to us in those appallingly effective ads about crumpled children and gluey veins is not so much the government, to whom we might prickle at the interference, but is much more like our conscience and so avoids the problem.

I'm afraid the 'prickle' with Sense is also another example of the very broad tar-brush that so called bankers are getting slapped with these days, most of which should be reserved for the 1% of so called 'market-makers' that shattered 80% of the assets - and the government, who very tacitly not only let them do it, but encouraged it.

Digital trends for... Retail

Based on our digital trend watch and experience with clients in the retail industry, here are eight key trends we're observing:

Consumers are increasingly doing research online about high-value, mass-produced goods such as electronics - including reviewing user comments (e.g. Reevoo), price comparison (e.g. Pricerunner) and voucher codes (e.g. My Voucher Codes). Online retailers, typically offering cheaper prices, corner a significant and increasing share of such sales.

Despite falling sales on the high street, online sales continue to rise - forecasts by IMRG expect 15% year-on-year growth for the foreseeable future.

However, retailers should note that online is still a small part of overall spend. Only 4% of total Christmas spend for 2008 was online.

Online shopfronts of traditional retailers such as Littlewoods (66% rise in Christmas sales in 2008 compared to 2007, according new Nielson Online figures) are growing faster than internet retailers such as Amazon (18% rise for the same period) as they increase investment in powerful e-commerce and digital marketing.

Home and fashion sectors have had the highest recent growth online, demonstrating that consumers are looking to buy more of those goods historically needing that "see before you buy" reassurance.

Retailers are leveraging their strong consumer brands to expand into new industries, such as Aldi's Travel website and Tesco's finance products.

Effective digital marketing has significant impact in driving online sales, including the use of affiliates, regular personalised email, SEO, social networks and reputation management. Ask Aqueduct about conducting a review of your "digital spread".

A growing trend, certainly in media and entertainment is moving away from physical product distribution, combining the benefits of online shopping with instant delivery (e.g. music and video downloads, software, e-books, e-tickets and even stamps).

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://blog.aqueduct.co.uk/2009/01/digital-trends-for-retail.html' title='Digital trends for... Digital is not exempt either, but there are definitely some attractive opportunities out there.

This current change is happening at an interesting time for digital, which was, and arguably still is, in a high growth mode. A number of the large consultancies have announced staff cuts in recent months (LBi, Publicis), online-only companies have been hit (Last.fm, Yahoo!), traditional industries have streamlined their workforce (Marks & Spencer, Nissan) and advertising spend had been tightly controlled over the Christmas season at a usually generous time of year.

Yet it’s easy to be negative. There are clear winners – Google, Apple, Voucher Codes. New digital startups are emerging and capital funding is not dead. If you're in business, here are our tips for not just surviving the downturn but rising above your competitors, growing your business and improving the bottom line.

Go digital. Assess the value of producing, distributing and updating your print communication. Can it be done (better) electronically? Exchange & Mart announced last week that they are finally ceasing their print version, concentrating purely online. FT are making staff cuts but continue to invest in FT.com.

Increase use of digital technology across your business. Go beyond your website being a marketing channel. Consider it a sales and service channel. Improve efficiency further through the use of digital tools internally for CRM, knowledge management, HR functions and project management.

Use free and appropriate technology. Many market-leading tools are available for free. The free economy is booming! Consider web usage tracking with Google Analytics, community tools such as Kickapps and Ning, and video hosting with YouTube or Vimeo. Use appropriate technology rather than the biggest full-featured product you can find. Microsoft Sharepoint is powerful software, but not appropriate for every business. Also, consider scalable hosting services such as Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure so you don't pay for more than you need.

Employ smarter digital marketing. Traditional display ads offer low ROI. Experiment with and regularly monitor PPC and other search engine advertising. Consider affiliates, referral models and other forms of online marketing. Be different to stand out.

Be where your audiences are. Your prospects, customers and other audiences won't always get to your website. Make sure you communicate to them where they are - social networking sites, blogs, discussion forums, news and reference sites. You need to have your voice heard outside of your website!

Get your customers to work for you. Use a "crowdsourcing" or "production of the masses" model to get your customers to contribute to product development, technical support or other parts of your operations. Nurture advocates of your brand who will do an effective job of marketing your products or services.

2009 is the year for making your spend more accountable and valuable. It's also the year for digital to be a significant enabler for your business, provided you employ the technology effectively. Contact us for a digital audit and strategy for your business.

Intranets: Spending money to save money

In a time where efficiency and cost effectiveness are being scrutinised it is important to ensure that your company has the right tools.

Intranets are fast becoming recognised as an essential tool for business.

Jakob Nielsen has recently commented on the 10 Best Intranets for 2008.
It is interesting to see some of the trends amongst the top ten winners:

Sharepoint is the most used product

Finance is most represented sector in the top 10 winners

ROI is measured with substantial cost savings for the top 10 winners

BA achieved a cost saving of £55 million

Campbell Soup Company achieved a 727% visit per day increase after redesign

Personalisation has become a trend

Feeds are more prevalent

Company news still dominates the homepage

The cost of an intranet can vary considerably. This shows that finding the right technology to meet scope and budget effectively is possible at all levels.

Jakob Nielsen is regarded by many as the Godfather of usability.Nielson’s research and analysis takes a very clinical approach. His studies are almost too scientific and tend not to address other fundamental keys to success:

Design

Implementation

Real world situations

Aqueduct has launched two global Intranets for our clients in the last quarter. Our experience reveals that besides the features and products there are many more factors that contribute to the successful launch and adoption of an Intranet.

If you are interested here is a link to the ’10 Best Intranets of 2008’ report summary.http://www.useit.com/alertbox/intranet_design.html

The full 362 page report can also be purchased via the same link.

Turn digital pennies into business pounds

In this economic climate, every hour and pound invested in marketing has to be justified. Smart use of digital is compelling for any marketer. It needn’t be expensive, and if your digital spend is mostly going on, say, technology or consultancy, your focus may need to change.

Make use of free (or virtually free), open, flexible and easy to integrate solutions that require little or no IT dependence.

In this post, Aquduct gives insight into 10 high-value initiatives marketers can try with digital - that won’t cost the earth.

Get your customers to work for you – use your website for “crowdsourcing”. Get your customers to contribute to product development (such as New Look), technical support (such as Apple) or other parts of your operations.

Retain and share your internal knowledge – make tacit knowledge work harder. Don’t rely on just one person to know about something in your organisation. Create a free hosted wiki (with PBwiki for example) or ask your IT team to add an open source wiki (such as Twiki) on your own network.

Make it easy to update your website without relying on IT – use an open source (such as MySource Matrix) or even hosted Content Management System (such as Wordpress) with the rich features you want, whether blogs, forums or workflow.

Scale your web hosting to what you actually use – many companies pay for more hosting than they need, or aren’t making the most of online-served applications. Consider scalable hosting solutions from “cloud” services offered by the likes of Amazon and Microsoft.

Add free “widgets” to your website – these are free bits of code you can add to your website; everything from Google Analytics to stock price feeds and bookmark sharing links.

Use more multimedia – video is now very economical to create and share online. Services such as YouTube and Vimeo allow you to embed quality video on your website without the headache and cost of hosting.

Have a presence on other websites – not all your prospects will even get to your website. Be where they are – it’s easy and free to create a group in Facebook, respond to relevant blogs or bookmark your top pages on Digg or StumbleUpon.

Build a community on your website – if Facebook and MySpace don’t suit your needs, create your own social network with free hosted tools such as Ning.

Get a branded, unique presence on all things digital – use products such as Umee to establish a rich branded presence on social networks, create your own widget for others to use, or build bespoke applications on the iPhone, Google phone or Facebook.

Conduct live testing on your website – use Google’s Website Optimiser to run tests of tweaks to key pages on your website, see the results and act on them.
